The island is a tribute to the thousand of local volunteers who over 30 years have replanted the island with up to 280,000 native trees returning this island jewel to much of its former glory.

The transformation has resulted in the return of much of the island’s forest species and the eradication of pests has enabled the relocation of over 15 endangered birds and reptiles including kiwi, kokako, Takahe, stitch birds, brown teal, and tuatara to the island.

Visitors to the island are free to stroll the many formed walks or join the guided tours provided by knowledgeable volunteers who for a modest fee will help you identify many beautiful and seldom seen species..

Notable on the island is the famous Tiri Tiri Matangi Light House. This magnificent structure was erected in 1865 and remains the oldest working light house in New Zealand.

Visitors to the island are subject to strict bio security controls. No food or drink is sold on the island.
